The Story Glossaries

Greetings, Divine Archivists! Welcome to the official glossaries of the stories you’ll encounter in these worlds. If you ever encounter a term that puzzles you and want to see it featured here, leave a comment below.

R-39 – a quanternary (4 star) galaxy shaped and founded by the Esin. It has 7 habitable planets (Arboros, Duskra, Galene, Caelum, Icariel, Eremos, and Jaedis) and 11 moons. This system is settled by a conglomeration of former stellar nomads and refugee aliens species.

The Esin – Known to the citizens of R-39 as “The Navigators”, the Esin are a collection of aliens from faraway galaxies. Legend says they shaped R-39 into a paradise, determined to create a better world than those they once fled from. They eventually encounter the Homo Cosmiens and guide them back to R-39, where the human nomads make their home. Throughout history, the Esin are viewed with a mix of fear and wonder, representing the hope of legends and the despair of nightmares. Then, one day, all but a handful depart from R-39.

Empire of the Astral Veil – Located on Arboros and established in Cosmate 7157, the Astral Veil Empire rules over colonies among the Core planets.  The current emperor is Grannus Vulcaith, a renowned former leader of the Starward Legion. The Astral Veil Empire believes in progress above all and faith in their machinations. They were the first to protest against the influence of the Esin, believing their interference was robbing them of innovation and independence.

Starward Legion – An elite knighthood that defends and polices the colonies of the Core planets under the Astral Veil Empire. It comprises of advanced magic users and cross-species warriors.

Dread Knights – A rebel knighthood of misfits from every corner of R-39, and sympathizers of the Rim, which has been excluded and ostracized by the rest of the system due to their lack of resources and “useful, stable  magics.” They pirate supplies and act as a more chaotic version of the Starward Legion, protective of the vulnerable peoples of the Rim and ruthless in their pursuit to ensure its survival. Many members of the Dread Knights have infiltrated the Stardward Legion, using the information gleamed to their advantage.

Aethre – A cloud-based haven where the consciousness of the dead can be stored. Part of the Eternity Promise, in which those suffering from extreme radiation effects are granted a new body through the bio-forge. It was invented in Cosmate 6399 in the wake of The Great Sickness.

Bioforge – A machination that uses precious metals and biosynthetic components to build new bodies. Those stored in the Aethre are downloaded into these shells and re-animated. Few exist in R-39 due to their costly expense of resources. This, however, has led to less efficient and highly dangerous “jerry-rigged” versions.

Oriel Towers – These are spires that stick out of the ground and excite molecules to form a barrier. Used to protect cities and means of terraforming, as the barriers can contain life-inspiring gasses within.

Orbital Mirrors – As the name suggests, these are mirrors erected in orbit. Their main function is to absorb solar rays and covert them into energy. Later, the mirrors were also used to protect against solar flares and camouflage confidential locations. A less common use for the Orbital Mirrors was Celestial Projection, in which they were used to manipulate the perception of the sky from the ground. One notable example of this occurs in Sollustre, where the Orbital Mirrors simulate a night sky. For a planet tidally locked to always face the sun, this provides safety from flares and issues of constant exposure, but it also allows the peoples of Sollustre reprieve from endless daylight.

Cosmate – In R-39, the Intergalactic Coalition of Colonies (ICC) measure time by the average of the Core planets’ rotations around the suns. This measurement of time is referred to a “cosmate.” 1 cosmate = 432 average days.  This averaging of time is believed to be possible because of ancient interference from the Esin. Most planets have a central Chronoscale, which keeps track of planetary orbits and slight time variations. Think of this as intergalactic time zones.

Fluxogenesis –  a natural evolutionary phenomenon where cellular (DNA) alteration occur as the resilt of prolonged radiation exposure and repeated Flux Cycling. Governed by the Law of Flux and the Law of Relative Conversion.

Flow of Flux – also known as the Law of Flux – this states that all matter–tangible and ethereal–churns in a constant state of transformation. Creation > Destruction > Regenesis → these cycles of evolution are necessary to the existence of all. Nothing is stagnate or pure of alterations. To access cellular magic is to follow this Flow of Flux, for magic must always morph and move.

Shallows of Yume also known as the human realm, where influence from the Sea of Cultivation is weakest. In the city of Seattle, humans are aware of magic, gods, and monsters, but not everyone is able to perceive/experience these the same. Only those who reside closest to the Sea of Cultivation are able to fully interact with the supernatural elements in the city.

The Night Lotus Market – an extensive underground city beneath the cobbles of Seattle, where monsters, gods, spirits, and humans cross paths. This part of the city is close to the Sea of Cultivation and connected to all the other realms, making it a hotbed of magic and mayhem.

Yomi In Godflower, this is a vast underground club, located in one of the deeper chambers of the Night Lotus Market. It is said to resemble the Cavern of Roots.

Cavern of Roots – A black wound that plunges into the earth, this is said to be the underworld. Very little is known about it.

The Muted Shores – a distant shore where lingering spirits of the dead reside. They must pass through an outer strip of shores, known as the Crimson Mirror, in order to reach the Muted Shores.

Ukiyama – also known as “The Floating Mountains” and is the home of the Undying Archives, a beloved refuge for many of the gods wandering the earth. Only those Ukiyama intend to find it ever will. Souls of the dead may serve here.

Maumi – also known as The Devil’s Sea, this is the realm of the yokai and home of the current de facto Demon King, Nura Nakano. Little is known about this realm except that it resides deep within the Sea of Cultivation, where not even light from the Heavenly Lanterns can reach.

Isle of Five Shores – a hidden island that sometimes appears north in the Puget Sound. It is occupied at all times by members of each Weeping Red clan.

Sea of Singing Shores formless, fluid membrane that encases all things.

ーTermsー

Kami Spirits, deities, divine beings, natural and spiritual phenomenon revered in Shinto.

Yokai – supernatural spirits and entities from Japanese folklore.

Soul Shards – Whenever a kami lives in the human realm for an extended time, their souls crystalize into glassy stones that contain their whole being. As tangible objects, the stones can be shattered into shards, which act as anchors that tether the kami in the human realm and echoes that ensure their survival if their bodies are destroyed. For a handful of kami, the act of dividing their essence is one of protection – it is the most valuable part of themselves they can offer to each other to avoid conflict. But for many kami, it is a taboo act of self-corruption; soul shards are susceptible to emotional instability on their own; they are meant to be whole. Still, to manifest within the shifting human realm for long periods of time, a kami must give up part of their essence (a shard) and anchor it within a physical object born of the world.

Soul Song – magic of the serpentine dragons that weaves powerful emotions and memories.

Kitsune – Fox spirits from Japanese folklore. Often depicted as either messengers for Inari or trickster yokai.

Kizuato – a spiritual scar that only the bearer and higher level divine beings can see. It signifies encounters of the supernatural kind.
