Meet the Editor

Ari Augustine

Professional gravedigger of assassinated darlings and your new partner in crime.

The art of storytelling is in our veins. We’re wired to create and connect—to spin tales for others and ourselves. Our memories, languages, histories, and collective hunt for meaning in this vast, turbulent world are the marrow of the human condition; they are the lifeblood of the stories we weave.

My name is Ari Augustine. I’m a professionally trained independent book editor, author of adult speculative fiction, and a lover of stories that speak to the humanity in all of us.

I’m a sucker for riveting tales set in immersive worlds, stories inspired by S.E. Asian folklore, and slow burn romantic subplots. Bonus points if it includes characters with complex (and psychology-based) motivations, POVs, emotional reactions; all the plots (cozy plots, quiet plots, earth-shattering plots, twist twirly plots); and, of course, stories that break the mold of convention in exciting ways!

My editing approach is uniquely holistic, blending creativity, psychology, reader-based interpretation, and common sense logic to help authors forge stories that resonate with their readers.

Editing Philosophy

My mission is to preserve your creative vision of the story above all else. For there is nothing more sacred and honorable than writing the story of your heart—the one you’re meant to put to paper.

Editing is a collaboration towards that goal. Together, we’ll prepare your story for the world, and ensure it translates for readers without sacrificing the soul you’ve poured into it. Elevate where it shines. Temper where it struggles. Forge a story readers crave to connect with. Stories the reader in YOU and ME are obsessed with.

As your editor, I promise that: our collaboration will always keep your creative vision at the heart of every suggestion. I’ll support you through revisions, available up to 6 months post-edits to answer any questions or concerns you have. This process is just as much about nurturing you as a creative writer as it is about your story’s journey to publication.

My Qualifications

I hold a BA in English Literature (core specialisms: SF/F genres, creative writing, reader theory, & story editing) from the University of Washington, and an AS in General Science (core specialisms: Psychology & Earth Sciences) from CCAC.
