Kaito Moriya is the second main character of Godflower. Born in Lands of Heavenly Lanterns, he was emissary for the moon kami Tsukuyomi and one of the architects of Soul Song—a magic that weaves memories and the emotions into music. Though disputes between Tsukuyomi and his sister, Amaterasu (sun kami) continue to prevail in silence, Moriya and Seiya Ito (Amaterasu’s emissary) forge an unexpected friendship that deepens into a brotherhood.
When Moriya struggles to find inspiration for Soul Song and understand the complexities of the lives that rely on their creations, Tsukuyomi releases him from his emissary position to gain new experiences among the humans in the Shallows of Yume. Unwilling to let go of his bonds with Ito, he petitions Amaterasu, who grants his wish with one condition: they each must give up that which they covet and neither will posses it again until they have learned their lessons. It is unknown to all by the two dragon spirits what they gave up, but they agreed to it.
In order to tether themselves to the Shallows of Yume and walk among the humans in physical form, they had to manifest their souls into delicate gems and use slivers of them to act as anchors. These gem slivers are known as “Soul Shards.”
The two dragon spirits ventured into the world embracing all it had to offer..
At the start of Godflower, Moriya is awakened by Harue and Aikawa after spending years in a suspended, healing sleep. Ito’s betrayal and presumed death has weakened him considerably, but it is still his responsibility to bear the consequences for his friend’s actions; it’s also his duty to protect the interests of the Order of the Chrysanthemum against threats. Aikawa and Harue inform him that the Ten no ki–also known as the Tree of Heaven–was thrown into the Shallows of Yume and the Weeping Red families, who are tasked with protecting the Soul Shards ofthe kami wandering the human realm, are the primary targets.
Feared as much as he is revered, Moriya is viewed by the Weeping Red familes and Order of the Chrysanthemum as wise counsel with a lethal edge. A divine force than can destroy as much as he creates. But unknown to them, Moriya is no longer the deadly predator his duties require him to be. Only Aikawa and Harue know what Ito’s mistakes have cost them both. And Moriya must keep the promise he made to Ito the day they descended into the Shallows of Yume, even if it means breaking his oath to protect the Order of the Chrysanthemum.
This leads him to break his own rule by having Kyoko Enomoto wake and merge with Murasame, the Soul Shard that the Enomoto family was tasked to guard. To him, she is the only one who might be able to tame the Soul Shard long enough for the threat to be eliminated.
The two strike a deal that comes with irreparable consequences.
Kaito Moriya’s human form is 5’9″, with a lithe and delicate body that gives give the edge of of moving quickly and quietly. His hair is shoulder-length and coal black with a grayish hue and often pulled up in messy bun. His eyes are cimmerian with subtle flecks of silver. His skin is etched with constellations from the northern hemisphere, which shimmer as they migrate on their own, mirroring the night sky.
His dragon spirit form is serpentine, with deep black scales that gleam in the moonlight and pure silver eyes. It has four legs with sharp, black silver talons, two whiskers that trail from his snout, and jagged antlers that crown his head. In his dragon form, Moriya can also shrink himself down, appearing like a common black snack in the wild, which takes far less energy than manifesting into his full dragon spirit form.
