There are two versions of Kyoko Enomoto. The adopted daughter of the Weeping Red–families sworn to protect the soul shards of gods wandering the modern world–who must put order and duty above all else. As an Enomoto, she is honor-bound, loyal, and a reserved yet diehard servant of a serpentine god no one has ever seen. Everything she needs to be to appease the other clans and their gods until her brother inherits the role.

Then she’s free to openly embrace  the other Kyoko. A Mediator between the realms and the most sought-after magic-weaving DJ. The only god she truly cares about is the one who left her on the Enomoto doorstep a decade ago, strange kanji sewn into her skin and a hunger for chaos that makes her feel at home with the yokai demons of the city. Now twenty-one and addicted to Soul Song–a rare magic that weaves music with emotion and memories–she uses her night gigs to coax him out of hiding, desperate for answers.

And she’ll soon get them, even if they destroy her.

For centuries, Kaito Moriya has kept his end of a deadly promise: to protect Murasame–the corrupted and volatile soul shard of his oldest friend–no matter the cost, ensuring it is neither awakened nor destroyed. It’s an ill-bent fate that has left him weakened, wounded, and grieving. Armed with a sickly form and unpredictable magic, it’s a position no dragon god anchored to the human realm should be in. But when an unhinged force bent on revenge begins terrorizing the city of Seattle, provoking yokai and killing clans of the Weeping Red for their soul shards, Kaito must break his promise in order to keep it.

And it will descend all the realms into chaos.

When their paths cross, Kaito and Kyoko make a fate-bending bargain: as one of the creators of Soul Song, he will teach her everything she needs to master it and reconnect with her hidden god. In exchange, she must merge with and tame the Murasame soul shard–a forbidden request no human has ever fulfilled and lived to tell the tale. And though Kyoko is no stranger to playing russian roulette with fate, it’s a bargain that proves dangerous when the soul shard thrives on her blend of magic, using it to satisfy bloodthirsty urges and altering her in unimaginable ways.

Ways that force Kyoko to confront the past and herself, even if it means sacrificing her humanity. Ways that unravel Kaito, piece by piece, until the harsh truth of his well-intended deeds is irreversible.
